Outside spaces can be hard to come across when you live in an apartment block or a terraced house with a tiny city garden. However, there are ways to maximise the potential of even the smallest of spaces, from a cramped backyard to a tenth-floor balcony. With a bit of innovation, you can create a homely outdoor area, wherever you live!

Transforming A Balcony

Many balconies are left as nondescript add-ons rather than used as a flourishing city garden. With proper planning, you can turn the space into a cosy extension of your living room or a miniature flower forest.

Timber creates a rich and warm aesthetic, which makes a great backdrop for hanging baskets and pot plants, although there are a few significant problems. Balconies are exposed to the elements, so a timber decking would be vulnerable to rot and erosion. However, composite decking is composed of recycled plastics and wood fibres, which work together to create an alluring wood hue and a non-slip, splinter-free, and water-resistant material. This is perfect for an alfresco living space, as you can pad around in bare feet with a book or a glass of wine, enjoying the view that graces your city garden, bordered by a balustrade.

A balustrade makes the ideal safety rail for a balcony, with aluminium posts coated with anthracite powder and spindles to match the grey, charcoal or coffee colours of our composite decking. This adds a quaint, cottage-type look to your compact outside space. Alternatively, you can opt for glass panels instead of spindles, which allow children and pets to gaze at the view without being in any danger whatsoever!

A Sky-High City Garden

Any artwork imagining a sustainable future tends to include roof terraces adorned with plants, allotments and greenery. Maybe we’re not quite there yet, but it’s certainly possible to create a city garden for residents, office workers and clients. Somewhere they can enjoy greenery and a wide open sky, even in a maze of urban skyscrapers.

Private terraces might follow the theme of an extended living space, opting for decking as a surface for tables and seating, whilst a trellis border can be transformed into a green wall, covered in vegetation and flowers for an eco-friendly approach. Offices and rooftop terraces can also draw on the sustainable utopian aesthetic, although they might opt for a different approach, using a sleek glass balustrade to capitalise on the view.

Our decking can fit in with a neat, professional-looking floor, whilst its recycled components make it a real talking-point for any proud new company. Alternatively, you could opt for bigger flowerbeds, with shrubs, trees and more, intersected with our anti-slip boardwalks.

Small House Gardens

What can you do with a tiny backyard?

There are several ways to add interest and maximise space, starting with using decking at different levels to create separate spaces for pot plants and seating areas. This also draws on the current trend of zoning, which adds interest to your garden by forming sections dedicated to different activities.

If your garden isn’t big enough for multiple spaces, why not transform uneven soil into a relaxing deck, supplemented by rugs and sofas? With hanging baskets and potted trees, you can make it both a luxurious haven and a gorgeous city garden.
