How long do composite fences last?
Any good quality fence should be long-lived to protect the privacy, safety and beauty of our gardens. One of the most popular fencing materials is WPC (wood plastic composite), a rising star in the landscaping world, famed for its durability and weather-resistance, amongst other traits.
But how long will a composite fence last you? And is it really worth the investment?
What is composite fencing made from?
Composite fencing is comprised of a unique blend of components which give it outstanding properties:
- Recycled wood: The incorporation of wood fibres gives the fence panels an authentic wooden appearance that complements any garden.
- Recycled plastics: Plastic components enhance the panels, benefitting them with a range of desirable properties, including durability, longevity, weatherproofing, and resistance to mould, rotting and twisting.
- Ultra-violet agents: Composite panels do not fade as quickly in sunlight, due to the inclusion of ultra-violet agents which make them UV-stable.
- Pigments: We provide several colours of fencing to suit different styles, created through the addition of pigments.
The composite panels also contain a few antioxidants and lubricants to enhance the mix.

How long do composite fences last?
Composite fences can last between 30-50 years, if looked after properly. That’s because they do not suffer from the same issues as natural wood, namely degradation by insects, mould, fungus, or moisture. Additionally, traditional wood fencing is highly susceptible to damage by high winds. One of the most common reasons that fencing needs to be replaced is because panels have been blown down during storms.
Saige fencing has been tested to gale force 9 winds, so the risks of wind damage are eliminated by choosing to install composite fencing. Natural wood fencing typically lasts around 10 – 30 years, making its composite cousin a much more long-lasting option that will also not require the more intensive upkeep that natural timber can require.
While a big draw of composite material is its low-maintenance needs compared to real wood, a little bit of TLC every now and then can keep it looking good and performing well for many more years to come. Just ask our team for maintenance advice when you enquire.
